Ten Qualities Open-Air Preachers Must Develop

In 1974, Noel C. Gibson of Open Air Campaigners put together ten qualities that all open-air preachers should work on developing. More than 50 years later, this list is still relevant.

  1. A clear penetrating voice by careful control of diaphragm and breathing. Shouting is definitely out. Voice control is in. A controlled voice may speak with power for a considerable period. If the local ordinances or Police permit the use of an amplifier, it should be used discreetly.

  2. A good knowledge of God's Word, and the ability to illustrate and communicate it, meaningfully.

  3. To be humble of heart, natural in manner of expression, and enthusiastic for the message of the Gospel.

  4. To be honest in every situation, and to be willing, if necessary, to admit not knowing the answers to difficult questions.

  5. To be gracious in dealing with hecklers, and those who oppose the Gospel presentation.

  6. A genuine love for people. All types. All conditions.

  7. To be sensitive to the control and direction of God the Holy Spirit in your preaching, personal work, and private life.

  8. To be a seeker after righteousness in private and public life. Holiness comes before happiness. Seek the first, and the second will follow.

  9. To speak confidently, and leave positive, rather than negative impressions. People should be spoken 'to', not 'at'.

  10. To develop an unbroken prayer life, so that the Lord may speak through you.
