“My grandmother believed in Jesus; I want to know more” – Coventry Evangelism

It was a real joy to join up with Steve Cook and The Open-Air Mission team in Coventry today. The last time I was in Coventry was in 2009, so it was wonderful to see how much the city has changed and also to proclaim Christ once again.

Since it is Reformation Day, a brother began the outreach by preaching on “Six Important Words” (The Just Shall Live By Faith). He did a splendid job proclaiming reformational (biblical) truth and then calling on all who listened to come to faith in the Lord Jesus.

While he was preaching, I was busy handing out tracts and talking to people. As I did this, I noticed that a Muslim lady was paying close attention to what we were doing, so I approached her to offer a tract. She very quickly accepted it, and then encouraged her children to take literature also; all her children excitedly took the “Life of Jesus” tract. Throughout the day, I encountered several Muslim mothers who were keen for their kids to take literature. May these seeds that have been sown be used by the Lord to bring families out of the darkness of Islam!

Soon it came time for me to preach; I took for my text 1 Timothy 1:15 - “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.” As I started to preach, a few people stopped to listen, and some made their way to the literature table. One young man, Rhys, stood to listen to the whole message; afterward, he came up to me to talk further. It was clear that this man was looking for answers as he started off by asking “Is life worth living?” While speaking about this topic, he said, “My grandmother believed in Jesus; I want to know more.” This provided a wonderful opportunity to speak to him in-depth about the Lord Jesus, and his need to trust in Him. Rhys took a copy of “Ultimate Questions” by John Blanchard and a copy of John’s Gospel. I encouraged him to examine the Scripture, and to ask, “Is it true?” He seemed quite thankful for the resources, and he left promising that he would investigate Jesus further.

Not long after this Steve began to preach. He spoke about the Ten Commandments, and how they reveal to us who God is. While he was preaching an Indian couple stopped to listen. They stood there for a few minutes before moving on. As they walked off I intercepted them to engage them in conversation. There was a bit of a language barrier, but they had questions about their biggest need. I explained the gospel to them the best I could, and they both left with gospel leaflets.

Throughout the two hours that we were on the streets, many tracts were handed out. I personally found it incredibly encouraging to be able to work alongside my brothers from OAM and to serve the Lord in Coventry. Please pray that the Father would draw many to Jesus (John 6:44).
