Returned to Hear the Good News! – Portsmouth Evangelism
It seemed a bit quieter in Portsmouth today, but we were still able to have many good gospel conversations. As usual, the free literature table proved to be busy, with people from a variety of backgrounds stopping to browse the material and take booklets that speak to their needs.
An older man stopped near the open-air board. He took a gospel tract, then told me, “I have my own beliefs, but I am questioning.” He didn’t want to speak too much, but he did take a copy of “The Unique Jesus”.
I started the preaching by speaking on “God is Love!” At the end of the message, two people took copies of John’s Gospel, with one of them speaking at length with a team member.
One of those who listened was a young man from North Carolina. He shook my hand and commended the preaching, then revealed that he wasn’t a Christian; rather, he was a theist who is secular in his outlook. The young man admitted that he knew the Creator existed, so I asked him, “Since you know God is there, how can you maintain a secular worldview?” He admitted it was a dilemma and said he needed to consider Jesus further. After hearing the gospel, he received a Bible and an apologetic booklet.
Next up to preach was Jim, who spoke on “Hope in Christ.” Truly, he is ‘Happy Jim’ – when he preaches, he becomes more excited about the Saviour who died for him. It is clear that his preaching flows from a heart that has been touched by the Saviour.
At this stage, we went back to handing out tracts and chatting to people. It was encouraging to see the literature table surrounded, with team members having good conversations.
After some time doing one-to-one witnessing, I preached once more; this time I spoke on “Are You Good Enough for Heaven?” A few people listened, including a Muslim lady who gladly received a copy of John’s Gospel at the end of the message.
By now, it was time to start packing down, but before we could finish the outreach, a lady approached me whom I had spoken with about eighteen months ago. It was good to see her again, and she told us, “I’m so glad I came into town today; I really needed to hear your message.” This time, she took a Bible and some booklets. It was encouraging that after eighteen months she was still considering what had been told to her last time; we just pray she moves from mere consideration to embracing Christ as Lord.
Please spend a few moments praying for all those we spoke with today – may the Lord rescue them.
