“I’m Spiritual, but I am considering Jesus.” – Portsmouth Evangelism
After being away in Yorkshire for a week, it was great to get back out in my local area to share the good news. There were six of us in Portsmouth today, and all of us were kept busy. People today seemed very open to receiving gospel tracts, so we handed out lots of them. These little paper missionaries will now make their way to numerous locations, where their message will continue to spread.
The literature table proved to be busy, with many people stopping to browse our material. While at the table, Jim spoke with a young man who admitted to liking the morality of Christianity, but he wasn’t sure about Jesus. Jim was able to share the good news with him and point him to Christ. At the table, I had the opportunity to speak with a university student from Bangladesh who was intrigued by the Christian message; after a brief chat, he took a copy of John’s Gospel.
Jim was the first to preach today. He did a great job of showing the depth of humanity’s sin and how the dilemma we face is that we can’t do anything to get out of it. He then lifted high Jesus, showing that Christ is our only hope. One man who was listening went to the table to take a copy of the ‘New Beginning’ booklet. As he did so, he said, “I really need a new start!”
After Jim finished preaching, we went back to handing out tracts until it was my turn to preach. Today, I decided to speak on “Your Life.” In this message, I sought to show the shortness of life, and then challenge people with the question – “What’s next?” One older man walked past shaking his head at me; it is truly sad to see the hatred some have for Jesus. I urged him from Hebrews 3:15 and 2 Corinthians 6:2 not to harden his heart, but he kept shaking his head.
A young man did listen to a bit of the message; then at the end, when I offered copies of John’s Gospel, he took one, saying, “I’m spiritual, but I am considering Jesus.” I encouraged him to read the Scriptures, as the Word of God will reveal who Christ truly is.
Throughout the day, we also had numerous Christians stop by. They all expressed that they were encouraged by the gospel being preached. Their words also served to encourage us as we sought to make Christ known.
Please pray for all those who heard the good news or received tracts today. May the Lord save them all!
