“It was clear and made sense!” – Guildford Evangelism
After being away from Guildford for a few months, it was good to return to one of our newest outreach locations. This was only the second time I’d been to this community, and once again, I was amazed at all the Lord did.
While we were setting up the literature table, people began to stop — including a lady from Bolivia who requested a copy of the Bible, and two young ladies who expressed interest in the Scriptures. It is always encouraging to see people wanting to read God’s Word.
There was a Christian conference taking place in town, so several Christians offered us words of encouragement, including a couple who were very keen to find out more about the work. We happily gave them information about The Open-Air Mission, along with a card linking them to Hell’s Best Kept Secret, so they could learn more about how to evangelise.
Tony was the first to preach; he spoke about how people make up their own rules and then go their own way. From there, he transitioned to Psalm 24 to speak about the kind of person who will go to Heaven.
Shortly after Tony finished preaching, it was my turn to proclaim the Gospel. I spoke on “Hope for a Broken World.” A couple of people listened, including a man who accepted a Gospel of John when offered, and then asked for details of a local church. He spoke to Tony and was referred to Grace Church Guildford. Another man who listened to the preaching also received a copy of John’s Gospel.
While Tony and I were busy preaching, two other team members were actively handing out tracts and chatting with people. Several good conversations took place, including one with two young people who had no Christian background but were interested in learning. Their only knowledge of the Bible came from Religious Education classes at school. After hearing the gospel, the young people accepted copies of the New Testament.
Tony preached again, this time on “The Seven C’s of History.” One of those who listened gladly received a copy of John’s Gospel and shared with Tony that, although he is a church attendee, he had been struggling.
For my final open-air, I preached on “The Good Person Test.” A few people listened, including a Muslim couple. At one stage, the Muslim lady was filming me while her husband stood beside her. Once I finished preaching, I offered copies of John’s Gospel to anyone who wanted to find out more about Jesus. The Muslim couple responded!
They shared that they were on holiday from Egypt and were intrigued by the message. The lady excitedly said, “It was clear and made sense!” The couple promised they’d read the Gospel of John, as they wanted to learn more. Another man who had been listening also received a copy of John’s Gospel.
Tony was the final preacher of the day. As he preached on “Bridging the Gap,” the heavens opened, and it began to rain — spelling the end of the outreach.
The Lord was truly kind to Guildford. Please pray for all those who heard the good news, especially the Muslim couple.
