Never Read the Bible – Reading Evangelism
It was a little bit grey and damp as we arrived in the town centre of Reading. Thankfully, the heavier rain we had earlier in the day stayed away, and for a couple of hours we were able to share the good news.
Jamie started off the open-air preaching by asking the question, “How does God speak?” He did a good job of showing people how God communicates with us. As he preached, a group of older teenagers approached the literature table. They were browsing the material and seemed interested. Sadly, they confessed to never having read the Bible. Here we are in a land that has been influenced so much by Scripture, yet young people are going through life devoid of God’s truth. All of them gratefully received copies of John’s Gospel and said they would read them.
Throughout the outreach, the literature table continued to be busy. At the end of the day, I noticed that we had run out of Bibles and New Testaments, and lots of other booklets had also been taken by people. May many read their way into the Kingdom!
Another man I spoke with at the table told me he hated God. I asked why, and he replied by pointing out Sodom. The man’s argument was weak, and ultimately it came down to the question of why God should punish evil. He wasn’t interested in answers; instead, he just wanted to rant.
During this time, Richard was busy preaching on the truth that all people must appear before the judgement seat of Christ. He was followed by Rich, who preached on “Did You Know…?” This message explains, through several key points, the uniqueness of Jesus and how all need to come to know Him.
The final preacher of the day was Trevor, who preached from Isaiah 45:22. He exhorted all people to look to Christ to be saved.
We ran out of time for me to preach, but that is fine; clearly, God didn’t want me preaching today. Instead, I had the joy of speaking with several different Christians who were very encouraged by the work of evangelism and were thankful to hear the good news on the street. Please pray that the Lord would raise up more labourers.
