Back to Portsmouth!

After being away in Yorkshire last week, it was good to return to a regular outreach in Portsmouth. The city centre was quieter than usual, but the grey and windy weather may have been a contributing factor.

Upon arrival, we noticed that a man who regularly busks in the area had set up near our usual preaching location. I spoke with him to see how long he would be, and when I heard that he was only just about to start, I assured him that we would move further down the street so we would not interfere with his work. The busker was stunned, then shared that the other day a preacher had set up next to him and blasted him with a loudspeaker. I assured him that was not our goal. He shook my hand and thanked us for being willing to accommodate him. It does not cost anything to be kind, so it is always good to love our neighbours on the streets and seek to build friendly relationships with them.

Not long after setting up, a young couple stopped at the literature table. At first, they did not seem very interested, but after chatting with Nigel, they became much more serious. They heard the good news and took a copy of the Bible.

Around this time, I had a chat with a fellow southerner, a New Zealander. Aussies and Kiwis have a friendly rivalry, but whenever we meet overseas, we seem to strike up a sense of mateship. It was good to hear about what he is doing in the UK and to speak about the Scriptures with him. He took a booklet and a New Testament after our conversation.

It was now time for me to preach. Today, I spoke on “The Road to Heaven”. A few people sitting nearby listened, with three of them receiving copies of John’s Gospel. One of those who listened later came back to request a copy of the Bible.

Next up to preach was Jim, who spoke joyfully about the good news that the Saviour has been given for us. He preached well and invited all who were willing to come to Christ.

Over at the table, Nigel was busy chatting with people, while Persis and Margaret were kept busy handing out tracts and speaking with people. Despite the quietness of the city, there were still plenty of people to speak with.

Please take a few moments to pray for all those who heard the good news today. May the Lord change this city through the power of His Word.
